Oswego Superintendent Unveils Budget Plan With 2.5% Tax Levy Hike, 59.4 Job Cuts

Superintendent of schools Bill Crist presented his proposed spending plan for 2010-11 to the board of education Tuesday night. The $74.4 million budget increases the tax levy by 2.5 percent – and includes moving the central offices into the Leighton school building. Leighton’s students would be dispersed to the other four remaining elementary schools and Oswego Middle School. The plan would also cut 59.4 full-time positions, district wide.

Leighton Parents: Don’t Close Our School

Dozens of parents, the majority those with students attending Leighton Elementary School, pack the board room for Tuesday night's school board meeting. Nearly 20 of them spoke out against a plan that would close Leighton. District officials say the proposal is but one option they are considering and a final decision won't be made for quite some time.

About 20 parents of Leighton students plead with the school board not to close the school. That is just one option the district is looking at if the Education Center is sold, the board of education said. No decision is going to be made on this for a long time, they said. Much more discussion is likely and public input is encouraged, they added.

Playground Plan For Leighton Elementary Takes Big Step Forward

The drawing of plans for a new Leighton Elementary School playground.A group of residents, led by Judi Kenefic, has been working behind the scenes for several years to put a new playground in place. Tuesday, the group made its plans public.

The wooden playground built in 1991 is falling apart, Kenefic said. “There’s very few pieces left and what’s there is not safe. Neighbors won’t go there anymore because it’s in disrepair and dirty.”
