“If I could bring my Mom back from Heaven,” Shirley Slate began, reading from her very first essay, a prayer for the return from Heaven for her mother for one more day.
“I just want to hold her one more time,” she said.
That Shirley Slate could read or write that essay was remarkable. At age 52, she’s learning to read and write and aiming to get her GED.

The first day of Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County (LVOC)’s Family and Books program 2010 was a winner for both the children and parents who attended. Over 29 children came to the Mexico Public Library on July 28th to enjoy 2 hours of fun and learning.
Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Inc. is offering a new volunteer orientation for its fall season on Wednesday, August 11 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The session will be held in the Pathfinder Conference Room at 34 East Bridge Street, Suite 301, Oswego.
