The Oswego County Health Department reported today (August 16) that Eastern equine encephalitis virus was found in three samples of bird-biting mosquitoes collected last week in Oswego County. EEE was detected for the second time this year near Toad Harbor Swamp in Constantia, where two mosquito samples tested positive, and for the first time this year in the Toad Harbor Swamp in West Monroe. Due to these findings, the Oswego County Health Department is taking the necessary steps to conduct aerial spraying of 10,000 acres in and around the Toad Harbor Swamp.

The Oswego County Health Department announced today (August 9) that West Nile virus was detected in a sample of bird-biting mosquitoes collected last week from the Toad Harbor Swamp in the town of West Monroe. The health department is working closely with the state Department of Health and will continue to monitor mosquito activity in Oswego County.
Two Pools Of Mosquitoes Test Positive For EEE In West Monroe, Palermo
The Oswego County Health Department reported that the eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was found in two pools of mosquitoes collected during the week of July 15. One sample was collected at Toad Harbor/Big Bay Swamp in West Monroe and the second was taken from the northeast section of the Town of Palermo.
Oswego County Plans Aerial Spraying This Evening
Weather permitting, the Oswego County Health Department will conduct an aerial spray of the Toad Harbor Swamp on the north shore of Oneida Lake this evening. The aerial spray will begin after 6 p.m. and continue until the area has been treated.
Oswego County Plans Aerial Spraying This Week
Depending upon weather conditions, spraying could take place on Thursday, August 5. The application would take place between 6 and 9 p.m. In the event of bad weather, rain dates will be on Friday, August 6 or Saturday, August 7. The actual date will be announced to the public through the news media.
More Mosquitoes Test Positive for EEE in Oswego County; Aerial Spraying Next Week
Oswego County Public Health Director Dr. Dennis Norfleet announced today that a total of eight pools of mosquitoes collected near the village of Central Square and the Toad Harbor Swamp area have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).
“The virus activity is developing into a situation very similar to what we had in 2009 when we had a case of human EEE in Oswego County,†said Dr. Norfleet.
