City officials accepted a bid from Rowlee Construction, Inc. yesterday (May 18) at a special meeting of the Common Council relative to the remaining asbestos and demolition removal at the former Nestles site. Specifically, the Fulton based construction company will remove the debris left on the 2.2 acre parcel of the former Nestles site that is designated for supermarket chain, Aldi.
A representative of the global supermarket chain, Aldi, has confirmed that the impending store location in Fulton will prevail despite the city’s demolition contractor backing out of the commitment to demolish the former Nestles site in its entirety. “We will still pursue the Fulton, NY location with plans for a grand opening in late fall,” said Aldi representative Aaron Sumida, Tully Division Vice President.
Demolition remains ongoing at the former Nestles property in Fulton, specifically targeting the more than two-acre corner lot promised to global supermarket chain, ALDI. Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said that Aldi is still interested in the site and demolition remains ongoing through the winter to the best that weather conditions allow. An Aldi representative recently confirmed this information to Oswego County Today.
The former Nestles site that has stood in Fulton for more than a century has seen another demolition milestone as the overpass connecting buildings on opposite sides of Fay Street has been removed. “I’ve walked miles over that ramp,” said former Nestles employee, Joanne Weaver.
The Fulton Common Council has unanimously approved a resolution at the regular meeting held Tuesday, September 20 to authorize the city of Fulton to submit a grant application to the New York State Empire Development Corporation. The grant, for the maximum amount of $500,000 would be used to complete infrastructure work and marketing for both the former Nestles site located at 555 S. Fourth St. as well as the former Sofco site located at 351 N. First St.
The demolition of the former Nestles site in Fulton is being seen by the public again as work continues on the front side of the building lining State Route 481. The demolition of the 24-acre site has been ongoing although it has not always been visible for the general public to see as the buildings in the back of the site required work first to get to buildings they connect to in the front, facing the main road with the most visibility. Currently, Infinity Enterprises is demolishing the most visible portion of the site to have the property ready for the incoming supermarket chain, Aldi. Infinity Enterprises was awarded the demolition contract, offering to complete the work for no charge to the city but instead just the sole rights to all salvageable materials on the site.
A bittersweet day for many long term Fulton residents, as the former Nestles buildings can now be seen being demolished from Route 481, the main road the buildings sit on. According to Fulton City Mayor, Ronald Woodward Sr. this is not the first day of demolition as much of the work already completed was done in the back of the buildings to be able to access the front. “They have been demoing in the back for a while. The buildings in the front that are being done now had a lot hooked to them in the back, all of that needed to be done first,” said Woodward. Traffic was affected for the first time today, as Fulton City Police Officers monitored the road and traffic flow, creating one lane usage.
Recently purchased by Gary E. Springs, former Nestles building #30 fell victim to $30,000 worth of vandalism believed to happen sometime Saturday (Jan. 9) night. Despite all newly replaced windows and a door being smashed, current owner, Springs, feels this incident is only a minor set back to his plans of opening a U-Haul business and storage facility.
