Optimism High Despite Tough Weather for Farmers

Driving through the district this past week I couldn’t help but notice a lot of corn being chopped and reflect on the season. I’ve seen a lot of nice crops out there, so I hope the season went well for most. I know it’s been an up and down year for many of us. The wet weather kept the pastures green and lush for grazing all summer long, but it made it difficult to dry hay.

Mature Workforce Stays in Labor Longer

The shift in workers over age 55 retiring and the growth rate in the U.S. workforce among workers aged 55-64 are unprecedented, according to a recent study done by the New York State Office for the Aging.  In 2000, 13 percent of the workforce was 55 and older, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, and by 2015, this figure is expected to rise to 20 percent.
