November 23, 2009 Contributor
The Fulton Noon Rotary Club was chartered on November 1, 1919, making the local service club 90 years old this month. Dick Kemmis, left, and Art Jones, right, elder statesmen of the Fulton Rotary Club, conducted the birthday celebration at a recent Rotary meeting. In 1919, 25 business and professional men, led by Frank Ash, of the Sealright Company, started the number 549th Rotary Club in the world. The Fulton club was sponsored by the Syracuse Rotary Club which dates from 1912. The Rotary movement was founded in Chicago in 1905. The Fulton Club is the fourth oldest club in Central New York. The Utica and Auburn clubs started in 1915, and the Rome Rotary Club followed a month later in December 1919. Today, there are nearly 34,000 Rotary Clubs, with 1.25 million members in 165 nations and territories. Ten years ago, in 1999, the Fulton Noon Club started the Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club.
