Closing state parks, such as Fort Ontario, to help reduce the state’s budget deficit is a short-term fix for the state and a long-term headache for communities, some Oswego residents say. Ironically, the fort is now under attack by the very state that it has defended for more than two centuries.
Gov. Paterson’s plan to fill a massive hole in the state budget consists, in part, of blowing holes in thousands of smaller budgets across the state. His plan to cut education aid, for example, just about doubled the size of the deficit the Fulton City School District is trying to fill.

Gov. David Paterson raised the stakes in his showdown with the state Legislature on Tuesday. He told legislators that if they were unwilling to make $3.2 billion in mid-year budget cuts, they should give him the authority and he’d do it for them.
The state’s largest tire dump is no longer in Oswego County. State, county and local officials gathered at the Fortino Tire Yard today to announce that cleanup of the site is nearly 100 percent complete. It had been the largest tire dump in the Empire State.
Gov. Paterson held conference call meetings with leaders of the Senate and Assembly this week and said afterwards he’s open to changing his mind. “I’ll go back and take a look at the license plates because it has upset so many people. I’m optimistic I can find a way to replace the $129 million hole and I’ll reconsider it,” he said, according to the New York Post.
The new state license plates have been unveiled. You’ll have to change your license plate when you renew your vehicle registration, starting in May, 2010. It’ll cost an extra $25 for the new plates.
