The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County (LCOC), is hosting a free literacy event, “Dig Into Reading,” Noon to 3:00 p.m. , Sept. 21, at Mexico Elementary School, 26 Academy St., it was announced by Jeanne Cieszeski, event planning team chairperson.
Monica George and Stephen Hook, members of the Oswego High School “Class of 2012,” were named “commended students” by the National Merit Scholarship Program for their exceptional academic promise.
Several Oswego High School seniors completed their successful academic trip toward graduation in August. The Oswego City School District Board of Education celebrated the students’ accomplishments by presenting diplomas during the Sept. 27 regular meeting.
Students, kindergarten through fourth grade in the Oswego County schools will receive age-appropriate safety manuals, which will be handed out through Sheriff Todd’s Child Safety Program.
Oswego Fire Chief Jeff McCrobie and Brookfield Renewable Power representative Stephen Murphy visited Oswego schools to promote the “Wear It” effort. The two stressed the importance of wearing personal flotation devices.
Oswego City School District teacher Linda Stummer noted, “Once again this year the Oswego Extended School Year Integration program joined with the summer schedule at Little Lukes.” What started out as an innocent appearing episode resulted in an exciting summer of writing, mystery and adventure for youngsters.

Students around Oswego will pay homage this coming school year to a man whose name is synonymous with education. The 2011-2012 school year will be dedicated to Dr. Edward Austin Sheldon, according to a resolution unanimously passed Tuesday night by the Oswego Board of Education. Sheldon is the founder of the college that today is SUNY Oswego
