Only Connecticut and New Jersey will reach Tax Freedom Day later than New York, according to the annual study recently released by the Tax Foundation. Fulton Schools Sets Community Meeting On Budget

The Fulton City School District will hold a community meeting on its proposed 2010-11 budget April 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Fulton Junior High School.

The district’s most recent draft of its budget shows a $60.8 million spending plan that increases real spending 0.6% (see note below) and requires a 3.8% increase in the tax levy.  18 jobs would be lost.

Cheers For Students, Criticism For Teachers’ Union As Hannibal Meets On Its School Budget Deficit

Hannibal taxpayers praised students and denounced the teachers’ union as the district explained again why it may have to cut jobs, sports and music; raise taxes by a large amount; or both.

Several dozen students sat directly in front of the Board of Education, taking up the first five rows of the auditorium.  They all wore white t-shirts that bore their new organization’s name: SOS, for “Save Our School”.

State Criticizes Fulton Board of Assessment Review

A report from the state Comptroller’s office finds that two members of the Fulton Board of Assessment Review were more successful in appealing their property assessments than the average citizens who came before the board to argue for reductions.

Fulton Mayor Ron Woodward agreed with the report’s recommendations but added that the report pointed out no wrongdoing.  “They said there was nothing criminal,” he said.
