OSWEGO, NY – Sunday’s low temperature did slip below zero. But, it didn’t come close to breaking any records.
It was the first time the area has been below zero since March of 2007, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
“The west side might have seen a bit colder temperatures. But here at the weather station, we only managed to get down to 1 below,” Gregway said. “There were some slight variations in the wind direction early Sunday.”
In 1899 the mercury dropped to -7 degrees on Jan. 10. That record lasted for more than 100 years.
The new record low was set in 2004 when the temperature plunged to -10 degrees.
“We hadn’t had a below zero reading since -2 degrees on March 6, 2007. It was also -1 degrees on Feb. 13, 2007,” Gregway noted.
