LADY LAKE, Fla. — Thomas E. Tovey, 81, of Lady Lake, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013.
He was born May 27, 1932, in Oswego, the son of Purley W. Tovey and Isabelle (Smith) Tovey.
He spent three years in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from SUNY Oswego where he was a proud member of Psi Phi Gamma Fraternity.
He taught in the Whitesboro Central School District for 28 years.
Tom was a life member of Optimist International. He served as lieutenant governor of New York District 1, president of the Whitestown Optimist Club and secretary/treasurer of that club. He enjoyed spending time at Sandy Cove on Piseco Lake, NY, where he enjoyed many lasting friendships.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce (Heagerty); two daughters, Marion Morton and her husband, Frank Cirillo, of Bethel, Conn., and Margaret (Charles) Haldeman, of Simsbury, Conn.; two sons, Paul (Bonita), of York-town, Va. and Thomas R. (Christine), of New Market, Md.; and three grandchildren, Katharine Haldeman and Allison and Amanda Tovey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an only sister, Ruth and her husband, Walter Sova.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. November 9 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.
Internment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
