Toronto beats Laker Women’s Ice Hockey Team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team opened its 2012-13 season with a 2-1 exhibition loss to the Toronto Midget Aeros on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers held a 1-0 lead after the first period, but were unable to maintain the lead.

Emma Smetaniuk (Jr., Frankford, Ont.) opened the scoring at 13:51 in the first period when she deflected a blast from the center of the blue line off of Jocelyn St. Clair’s (Jr., Cambridge, Ont.) stick. Megan Hagg (Jr., Pickering, Ont.) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Toronto came out of the locker room to start the second period with renewed vigor, as it turned up the pressure. As a result, the Midget Aeros peppered Laker goalie Bridget Smith (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) with 12 shots in the stanza. The visitors tied the game midway through the second period when Jessie Eldridge found the back of the goal after receiving an Emma Low-A-Chee pass.

Less than a minute into the third, Eldridge scored the difference maker when she forced a turnover in the Laker defensive zone and lifted her shot over Smith’s left shoulder under the crossbar.

Smith finished the game with 28 saves, while Brynna Kerr registered 10 saves.

Oswego State starts the regular season on Friday when it travels to Castleton State.
