OSWEGO – The opening of two new tackle shops in the City of Oswego, and a healthy increase in out-of-state visitors indicate that the sportfishing industry remains strong in Oswego County.
David Turner, Director of the County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning, said that two well-established businesses recently expanded to new locations in Oswego.
Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop, based in Pulaski, has opened a new store at 125 E. First St., Oswego. “We decided to open a store in Oswego because of the excellent fishing opportunities available there,†said co-owner Rob Ripka. “We have had a large customer base from Oswego coming to our Pulaski store for a long time and we wanted to offer them a more convenient location to shop at.â€
A few blocks away, Screwy Louie’s Sport Shop and Downrigger Service Center, based in Fair Haven, expanded to a new store at 9 E. Cayuga St., Oswego. Owner Brendan Shambo said he opened a new store in Oswego because of the “great business opportunity†that the Port City offers.
More than 30 charter captains are based at the three marinas in the City of Oswego. Several more are based at marinas in the ports of Mexico and Port Ontario areas.
Turner said despite the economic downturn, 31,870 out-of-state anglers purchased fishing licenses in Oswego County last year, a 7.5 percent increase over 2008. International visitors to the county increased 15 percent during the same time period, with 1,023 people outside the U.S. purchasing fishing licenses in Oswego County.
“These numbers do not reflect license sales made through the state DEC’s Web site,†said Turner. “Oswego County is recognized and receives national exposure as a fishing destination. Just this month, Outdoors Magazine ranked Oswego County third in its editors’ pick of the ‘Top 25 Fly-Fishing Destinations in the East.’ The City of Oswego was listed in the nation’s top 200 towns for sportsmen in the June/July issue of Outdoor Life.â€
