OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego Music Hall features a “Clarinet Summit” with The Joseph Brothers Quintet on Friday, Oct. 17 as part of its “Jazz by the Lake” series. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake St., Oswego.
The Joseph Brothers Quintet consists of Anthony and Ron Joseph, Barry Blumenthal, Dave Arenius and Jimmy Johns.
Anthony Joseph was band director at the Oswego High School from 1973 to 2006 and founded its “Evening of Big Band Jazz” concerts in 1981. These events paired nationally recognized jazz artists with students for performances. His group, The Anthony Joseph Swingtet, specialized in classic jazz standards and ballads from the Great American Songbook. The Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY)-nominated group was a frequent act at the Oswego Music Hall.
One of New York’s hottest jazz clarinet players, Ron Joseph has performed with various groups, including Skip Parson’s Riverboat Jazz Band, Jambalaya Jazz Band, Jon Seigler All Stars and The George Webster Trio. Ron is currently a member of The River Dogs Jazz Band performing around the Buffalo area.
Barry Blumenthal is a graduate of The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where he served as concert master of the Crane Symphony for several years, including performances at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. A true multi-instrumentalist, he plays piano, violin, trumpet and flugelhorn. He performed with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Symphoria!, The Central New York Jazz Orchestra and The Salt City Jazz Collective.
Bassist Dave Arenius is a native of Rochester, N.Y. who has shared the stage with Don Menza, Sal Nistico, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis and Attila Zollar. In the blues genre, he has performed with Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Joe Beard and Steve Grills.
Jimmy Johns has enjoyed a 40-year career in the Central New York music scene as both a vibraphonist and drummer. He was an adjunct instructor in both instruments at Colgate University and Hamilton College for over 30 years and has shared the stage with Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Slam Stewart, Nick Brignola and The New York Voices. Johns has played vibraphone at Pastabillities every Wednesday night for the past 25 years.
Tickets to the “Clarinet Summit” range from $17 to $20 and are on sale now at the river’s end bookstore, 19 W. Bridge St., Oswego or online at https://www.oswegomusichall.org/[1]. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, but people are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time to ensure a seat. Tickets at the door are cash or check only.
This event was organized by David Kaspar and made possible through the Oswego Music Hall’s Guest Curator program. It provides an opportunity to introduce new programs that represent demographics and artistic genres outside of regular Oswego Music Hall programming.
Located in the McCrobie Building, the wheelchair accessible venue is adjacent to Breitbeck Park and overlooks Lake Ontario and the Oswego Harbor. Light refreshments will be available at reasonable prices.
The Oswego Music Hall is a family-friendly, non-profit organization that has been run entirely by volunteers from its inception in 1977.
