University Police Makes Felony Arrest In False Threat Incident

OSWEGO – John Mietus, 18, a SUNY Oswego student from DePew, NY, was arrested on Wednesday (March 7), and charged with one count of “attempted placing of a false bomb or hazardous substance” in the first degree.

It is a Class E Felony.

At approximately 10 a.m., on Wednesday, University Police received a call about a student who was verbally disruptive in a classroom in the Marano Campus Center.

Taking immediate action to ensure the safety of all on campus, University Police officers located the student and promptly detained and questioned the student.

After removing Mietus from the building, officers conducted a thorough search and discovered an object that they believed might be hazardous.

A formal investigation commenced with the help of the Oswego County District Attorney’s Office and the Oswego City Fire Department, who quickly determined that the object wasn’t hazardous and confirmed that the SUNY Oswego campus community was never in any danger.

Mietus was arraigned in front of Town of Oswego Justice Michael Sterio and remanded to the Oswego county Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.

He is to reappear in Town Court on Monday March 12.
