OSWEGO, NY – Thanks to the combined efforts of Harborfest and Pathfinder Bank, visitors to this year’s celebration will have the opportunity to experience the glory of Oswego’s historic waterfront as the famous US Brig Niagara will sail into Oswego.
A perfect example of Oswego’s waterfront and its historic past, the US Brig Niagara is a dramatic reminder of the days when tall ships sailed the Great Lakes and routinely visited the Oswego harbor.
The official Flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Niagara was built in 1988 as a faithful reconstruction of the brig that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led to victory during the Battle of Lake Erie on Sept. 10, 1813.
“We are pleased to be able to bring this fine ship to Harborfest, and thankful to Pathfinder Bank for making it possible. Seeing the US Brig Niagara up close and visiting with its crew is a breathtaking experience you won’t want to miss,†said Executive Director of Harborfest, Tom Van Schaack.
The captain and crew share and interpret Niagara’s great history and its national significance by sailing the ship and keeping alive the language, the knowledge, and the skills used onboard early American naval vessels.
Niagara sails every summer to distant ports throughout the Great Lakes to serve as the premier attraction at maritime heritage festivals.
To compliment her crew of 17 professionals, she carries up to 24 trainees who sign on as crew (in training) and live onboard for two to four weeks to delve deeply into the 19th century sailor’s experience.
They learn the language, learn the way of a ship, and learn how to hand, reef, and steer under the tutelage of the ship’s professional crew.
“We are honored to be able to offer our community and the thousands of people who will visit for Harborfest, the opportunity to experience the U.S. Brig Niagara,†said President and CEO of Pathfinder Bank Tom Schneider.
The Niagara will be docked on the west side of the west pier during Harborfest with free daily tours, courtesy of Pathfinder Bank, available July 24 from 1 – 6 p.m. and July 25 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
