Utica Sweeps Laker Softball Team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team hit three home runs during Wednesday’s doubleheader against Utica, but came up short in 9-5 and 8-5 decisions as the Pioneers belted eight home runs over the course of both games. The losses dropped the Lakers to 8-11 overall, while Utica improved to 16-9.

Courtney Fitzgerald got the Pioneers started on the right foot with two-run home run in the top of the first. Oswego State responded in the bottom of the second when Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.) delivered her own two-run shot with two outs for her first collegiate home run after Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) led off the frame with a double.

The score remained tied until Mallory Ingalls led off the fourth inning with a solo shot for Utica, but the lead did not last long as Baker hit another two-run long ball to bring in Justine Abramowski (Fr., Levittown, N.Y.) from second base to put the Lakers ahead, 4-3.

Another Utica homer in the sixth inning gave the Pioneers a 6-4 lead after Dominique Carcone hit a two-out, three-run long ball. Oswego State cut the deficit in half when Abramowski singled in Maureen Lenehan (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) to make the score 6-5.

However, Fitzgerald started the seventh with her second homer of the game followed by two more Utica runs to put the Pioneers in front by the score of 9-5. Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) led off the Laker half of the seventh with a single, but was unable to come around.

Snyder earned the loss after allowing nine runs on 10 hits to go along with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Heather Kingsbury posted the win for Utica after working five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.

Baker finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Sammie Schroeter (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) and Abramowski had two hits each.

In the nightcap, Oswego State established a 4-0 lead after three innings. Brittany Carbacio (Sr., Pennellville, N.Y.) delivered a two-out, two-run single into center field in the second inning, scoring Brandy Earl (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) and Baker. Sue Schoff (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) then hit solo home run to straight away center field. Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) singled before Baker hit a ball that bounced off the fence in right center field.

Utica put together a four-run fourth inning with the key hit of the frame being a two-run blast by Meghan Matan to level the game, but took the lead for good in the sixth after an Ingalls grand slam.

Trailing 8-4, the Lakers got one run back when Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) scored after a double by Katie Bredin (So., Oneonta, N.Y.), but did not score the rest of the way.

Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) suffered the loss after surrendering six earned runs over five innings, while striking out one and walking three. Thayer threw two hitless innings and struck out a pair. Cassidy Thompson picked up the win for Utica after working the final 2.1 innings with one run on three hits.

Radley and Apps were the only Lakers to record multiple hits with identical 2-for-4 days.
