Vauter Wins First Ever Big Block Modified Feature At Fulton Speedway

By Dave Medler
FULTON, NY – Coming into Saturday night, Dan Vauter accomplished one of his racing goals, a feature win at the Brewerton Speedway that happened back on June 29th. The second goal was a win at the Fulton Speedway. Saturday night, Vauter and his family owned and sponsored team out of Forest City, Pa., got that coveted first ever feature win at the Fulton Speedway.

Vauter had a race long battle with Ryan Phelps and Chad Phelps, that lasted from the drop of the green to the checkers in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.

“It means everything, to get a win here and at Brewerton, is a dream come true,” Vauter said from victory lane with his dad who are the two that put in the hours every week in the garage so he can pursue his passion on weekends, driving a Big Block Modified.

Other winners on the Sunoco Fulton Ethanol Facility Night were, Jeremy Pitcher, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Alan Fink, NAPA Late Models, Corey Barker, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Mark Johnston, Parts Plus Four Cylinder Stocks.

Dan Vauter and Shane Donath led the 24 cars down to the green with Vauter grabbing the narrow early advantage in the 35 lap Modified feature. Matt Hulsizer, jumped into second from his starting spot to keep pace with Vauter.

With 5 laps complete, Vauter had a one-second lead over Ryan Phelps, as Hulsizer, Chris Hile and Chad Phelps raced for third through fifth just before a yellow for a slowing Pat Ward. Ward went to the pits and didn’t return.

After the restart, from lap 6 to lap 9, Phelps worked the top of the speedway and was able to work his way by Vauter to be scored the new leader. Two laps later, Vauter working the extreme bottom of the track was able to retake the lead. You could almost throw a blanket over Vauter, Ryan Phelps and Chad Phelps as they battled up front.

Laps 11,12, and 13, with Vauter on the bottom and Phelps on top, the two would swap the lead back and forth with Chad Phelps right there ready to pounce on any mistake.

At the halfway point, lap 18, the top three remained the same with Chris Hile and Matt Hulsizer trying to close in on the leaders.

The yellow would fly on the lap 22 when Larry Wight got a flat and headed pit side for a tire change.

With 10 laps to go, Vauter and Chad Phelps ran bumper to bumper on the bottom as Ryan Phelps still ran the cushion trying to carry his momentum to get around the top-two.

On lap 27, Ryan Phelps regained second for one last run at Vauter. Over the remaining laps, Vauter hit his marks on the bottom in the brown and was the first under the checkers by  0.578 over Phelps. Chad Phelps, Billy Decker and Chris Hile rounded out the top-five. Matt Fink, Matt Hulsizer, Steve Hulsizer, Roy Bresnahan and Mike Mahaney completed the top-ten.

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature, Joe Kline grabbed the lead on lap 3 and looked to be heading to the feature win as he was able to hold off all challengers until the last lap. Jeremy Pitcher, who started twelfth, went to the top of the speedway where nobody else was and ran down Kline setting up a last lap shootout. On the final lap, Kline and Pitcher went into turns three and four even setting up a drag race down the front straight that saw Pitcher win by 0.127 of a second at the checkers over Kline. Andrew Ferguson, Bob Henry Jr. and  Tony Finch II finished third through fifth.

In the 20 lap NAPA Late Model feature, Sean Beardsley ran an strong race and held off the field till mechanical problems sidelined him with 5 laps to go handing the lead over to Larry Wight. Wight’s lead was short lived as he had a tire go down with 2 laps to go, setting up a 2 lap dash between Alan Fink and Tim Sears Jr. over the final laps Fink ran dead even banging fenders and swapping paint that saw Fink pull out the narrow win 0.110 of a second win at the finish over Sears. Rick Miller, Steven Coit and Rob Mason chased the top-two across the line.

Corey Barker lead every lap of the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature for his second win of the year.   Brandon Ford, Gary Hoppins, Chris Hulsizer and Derek Warren finished second through fifth.

Skip DeGroff and Mark Johnston had a tight battle up front in the 15 lap Parts Plus Four Cylinder Stock feature before Johnston took over the lead for good on lap 9.  Skip DeGroff, Jon Shumway, Colby Herzog and  Jerry Herbert rounded out the top-five behind Johnston.
