A fire on a conveyor belt at the former Owens-Illinois bottle plant in the town of Volney had fire crews on the scene Monday (June 10) afternoon.
Reports from the scene indicate salvage crews were cutting the metal framing around the conveyor belt and it caught fire while workers were on their lunch break.
There were no reports of injuries but several firefighters who entered the building were exposed to glass dust that was in the air from the heat and smoke.
The former bottling plant is vacant and in the process of being dismantled.
Emergency units from Volney, Phoenix, Pennellville, Cody, Granby Center and Central Square responded to contain the fire.
Scriba and Moyers Corners Fire Department were called to stand-by at Volney and Phoenix Fire Stations.
Additional support from the Oswego County mobile cascade unit and Menter Ambulance were on hand at the scene.
