Representatives from Callahan, Flanagan and Smith Orthodontics presented an informative program to the students at Volney Elementary School recently that touched on many important aspects of oral care.

Dental hygienist Nancy Negus and marketing coordinator Claudia Murray spoke about proper brushing and flossing; eating healthy foods and limiting sugary and sweet snacks; the dangers and effects from smoking and smokeless tobacco; the importance of mouth guards when participating in athletic activities as well as the steps to take in the event of a dental emergency.

The overall theme of the presentation was ‘keeping teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime,’ and to do this Negus said, “Just remember the 2-2-2 Rule. Brush your teeth twice a day. Brush for a duration of two minutes and visit a dentist twice a year.”

Each Volney student received a‘smiles’ bag at the end of the presentation to take home to their parents and/or family members. The bags contained a new toothbrush, a box of toothpaste, a new pencil, and an informational letter about dental and oral health.
