In the library, students in grades kindergarten through second helped Messner read aloud her book, “Sea Monsters First Day” and commented just how fun it is to experience a good book.

After Messner explained her writing process, she offered tips on how to read a book with kids, including: read in character voices, sound out words you are unsure how to pronounce and to emphasize sounds at exciting parts.

In the K-2 presentation, one student said Messner was his favorite author, while other youngsters asked her questions about her writing adventures.

Volney Elementary School Library Media Specialist Sarah Manley invited Messner to sign the library’s author wall after Messner autographed books for several children.

Her presentation continued for older students in the school cafeteria.
