OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Fire Department has been fielding questions as to why the tops of some fire hydrants are different colors.
Through our hydrant testing program, we have been testing and painting the tops per NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines. The different colors indicate the amount of water flow for that particular hydrant which will improve overall efficiency.
With well over 900 hydrants in the city, it will take a few years to complete this task.
The Seventh Ward was the first ward to be completed and we thank the residents for their cooperation in this.
We also want to remind residents of our adopt a hydrant program where residents can adopt a hydrant in their neighborhood to monitor it for any damage or problems.
For more information on that program, call The Oswego Fire Department at 343-2161.
