Who will win the Team Spirit award at Scrabble Fest 2014?

OSWEGO, NY – There’s more than word play going on at the eighth annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest.

This benefit for Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County takes place on September 19, at the Oswego Elks Lodge.

Members of the last year’s Team Spirit winners, The Spelling Bees, representing CSEA, were all the buzz at the 2013 Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Fest. Who’s got the most spirit this year? Find out by forming your four-person teams and register for the annual Diane Falise Memorial Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Fest.

Meg Henderson, coordinator of OCO’s Literacy Volunteers Program, has watched another aspect of friendly competition develop over the past few years: Team themes and costumes.

“I am amazed by the creativity and effort that our Scrabble Fest teams put into their team names, costumes, and even props,” she said. “This has added a whole new level of fun and excitement to our annual fundraiser.”

For example, in 2013 some of the team names included: The Spelling Bees, The Better Letter Getters, Tilectomy and The Word Crafters, to name a few.

“We’re planning a nice prize for the team with the best team spirit this year,” Henderson said. “It’s always a difficult decision for the judges. Remember, creativity and enthusiasm are very important for showing off your team spirit!”

The fun, fast-paced competition draws teams from all over the county and beyond, Henderson noted.

Teams consist of four players, who work together to create words during three turns in each of the four 20-minute rounds of play. Team scores will be tallied and the top three teams will be awarded prizes.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Literacy Volunteers, this year’s Scrabble Fest will offer teams the chance to purchase a limited number of ‘Golden Tiles’, which play as a blank tile and can be used for the letter of their choice.  Additionally, the team with the highest pledge amount will be awarded 100 bonus points to their score.

Participants and spectators will also have the opportunity to take part in a silent auction – featuring some great items donated by local merchants who support Literacy Volunteers – as well as a 50/50 drawing, and a lottery ticket drawing.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with games beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per team and includes light refreshments.

The cost for spectators – those who want to attend but not compete in the event – is $15 and also includes light refreshments.

A full cash bar is available.

All proceeds from Scrabble Fest will benefit Literacy Volunteers.
