Wight The Class Of The Big Block Modified Field At Brewerton Speedway Friday Night

By Dave Medler
BREWERTON, NY – One week ago at the Brewerton Speedway, Larry Wight felt the old TV show Wide World Of Sports saying, “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”

On July, 28, Wight came within 7 laps of his second career 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified victory, only to get tangled up with a car he was trying to lap, ending his shot at the win.

Friday night, undaunted and on a mission , Wight took the lead on a restart on lap 19 and held off challenges from Steve Hulsizer and a furious last 3-laps charge from point leader Jimmy Phelps for the popular victory.

Other winners on Ingles Performance, Maple View Garage Night were, Kevan Cook, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds,  Tim Devendorf, Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club were also in competition with Alley Amell, Norm Richardson and Steve Healey picking up class wins.

Ryan Bartlett and Willy Decker brought the 800 horse power, Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified field down to the green, with Decker grabbing the early, narrow advantage in the 35 lap feature.

By lap 5, Decker held a few car length advantage over Wight and Bartlett, with Tim Sears Jr. and Steve Hulsizer not far behind in fourth and fifth.

With 10 laps complete, Decker opened almost a straightaway lead over Wight, who ran alone in second. Behind the top-two, Bartlett, Sears, Hulsizer and Pat Ward fought for third through sixth.

On lap 15, Decker was still out front setting the pace, as Wight slightly started cutting into the leaders advantage. Bartlett, Hulsizer and Ward still showed on the scoring tower.

The yellow would fly on lap 18 when fifth place running Pat Ward suddenly slowed as he went to the pits, but would return.

When the green came back out, Wight took advantage of the restart as he bolted to the lead on lap 19. Matt Fink and Hulsizer also got by early leader Decker.

With 10 laps to go, Wight held onto a one-car advantage over Hulsizser and Jimmy Phelps who started deep in the field.

A quick yellow would wave on lap 26, setting up a 9 lap battle to the checkers.

Over the remaining laps, first Hulsizer would try everything he had to no avail to get by Wight. On lap 32, Phelps would move into second as he took off after Wight in a 3 lap, two-car charge to the checkers.  Phelps would get close, but Wight hit his marks holding off the points leader to grab the big win. Steve Hulsizer, Matt Fink and Matt Sheppard finished third through fifth.

Wight talked about his strong win after parking his Gypsum Express/Tracey Road Equipment/ NAPA/Industrial Tire Of CNY/Stadium International Trucks/No.99L/Bicknell in victory lane after his second win of the year at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon”.

“We’ve been having a string of bad luck every week it seems to be. Last week we thought we had it, but lapped cars got in the way. We were able to come back with another one,”

Wight then talked about his pass for the lead and the win.

“He (Willy Decker) kept choosing the bottom every time, and I thought the top was better. We had that one lap run and he got me back on the bottom. All the sudden he took the top on the restart and I knew we were in.”

Coming into Friday night, Kevan Cook knew he needed a strong run and finish ahead of Ryan Scott who he was tied with atop of  the points in the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds in his drive for a second straight track title. In the 20 lap feature, Cook grabbed the lead on lap 6 and never looked back in the dominating win.  Jason Amidon, Dan Searles, Rob Keller and Ryan Scott finished second through fifth.

Coming into Friday night, Tim Devendorf had six win in just seven starts in the Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites. You can now make it seven wins in eight starts. Devendorf grabbed the lead on lap 17 when something went wrong on the front end of race long leader Lowell Zehr’s car. Once in the lead, Devendorf held off Jeff Isabell Jr., Rick Demo, Joe Isabell and Justin Williams at the finish.

Chuck Powelczyk put win number 54 in the record books in the Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks. Powelczyk grabbed the lead early on from Jessica Redhead and never looked back. Zak Petrie, Wendall  Washington, Jessica Herbert and Jeff Herbert finished second through fifth.

In the wild Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club feature, Ally Amell passed Ray Preston at the start finish line by inches for the win. Amell, Norm Richardson and Steve Healey were division winners.

On the race card will be the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites  and the Original Pizza Logs 600 Sprint Tour will be making an appearance.
