Oswego, NY – William “Billy” Barlow Jr. (Republican) of 76 Erie St., has announced his candidacy for councilor of Oswego’s Fifth Ward.
A fresh face to Oswego’s political scene, Barlow is no stranger to the city or the Fifth Ward.
Representing the fourth generation of his family to live in the Fifth Ward, Barlow recently returned home from Arizona St. University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management and now resides in the same neighborhood that his grandfather lived in.
“I am happy to be back in Oswego. It’s a great place to live and would like to have a positive impact on its future,” said Barlow.
With the retirement of current Fifth Ward Councilor, Daniel Donovan, Barlow sees this as an opportunity to do just that.
“I have always been interested in government and I am thankful to have a chance to serve my ward and the city. Having returned home after being away at college, I am able to look at my ward and the city with a new perspective and bring fresh ideas to the table,” said Barlow.
A local business owner, he established his own Barlow’s Concessions business earlier this year, Barlow shares the same vision that area businesses have for the future of Oswego and realizes the vital role that business plays in that future.
“One of my goals as councilor is to enhance our business community and work collaboratively with our city, county, and state officials to make Oswego appealing to businesses of all sizes, and create job opportunities,” said Barlow.
“Oswego has a wealth of assets; our scenic waterfront, a thriving port, excellent higher education opportunities at SUNY Oswego, and noteworthy attractions such as Oswego Speedway, Harborfest, and Fort Ontario just to name a few. The combination of these assets and the availability of meaningful employment will make Oswego an even more attractive place to live and raise a family. It may also inspire young people who have left our area to return and rediscover all that the city has to offer,” added Barlow.
As for the ward, Barlow intends to build upon the positive representation that it has received in the past.
“Mr. Donovan has done an excellent job as Fifth Ward councilor. My intention is to use that as a solid foundation that will allow me to enhance the level of representation we currently enjoy by reaching out to the residents of the Fiftth Ward, hearing their concerns, sharing those concerns with our Common Council, and doing my best to provide them with answers they are looking for. The Fifth ward is a great place to live and I am proud to say that I am the third generation of my family to live in the ward. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to run for councilor of the Fifth Ward and work to enhance the quality of life not only the residents of the ward, but for the entire city of Oswego,” said Barlow.
