SCRIBA, NY – Burial services will be held at 10 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery on May 23, 2015, for William J. Gessner, formerly of Oswego, NY, who passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2014 at his home in Alva, Fla.
Born on January 3, 1959, in Newton, NJ, Bill was the son of the late Robert C. Gessner and Philomena M. Dutcher.
He was a graduate of Oswego High School.
Bill was a lifelong entrepreneur, starting and operating many small businesses both in New York and Florida.
He was the former owner of Discount Tropical Pets, Oswego, Hallmark U-Stor-It, Phoenix, ASAP Logistics of Florida Inc., Gulf Coast Marine, Inc., both in Fort Myers, Fla., and several other small businesses.
He was also a member of the Laborers’ Local 214 in Oswego.
A marine aquarium enthusiast, Bill had a special talent for building specialty salt water fish tanks.
He was also actively involved in aviculture, having bred and raised Macaws and other tropical birds for more than 20 years.
He also enjoyed boating, was an avid auto racing fan, cared for all types of animals and shared a close bond with his family members, working side-by-side with them in all of his business ventures.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Barboza and his children, Billy Gessner, Christine Gessner and Carlos Barboza, all of Florida; his siblings, Dr. Robert (Kate) Gessner, Richard Gessner and Susan Carey, all of Florida; and six nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Linda (Carey) Gessner, who passed away in 1998.
