PHOENIX – Although the weather outside felt more like spring, student musicians from John C. Birdlebough High School created an winter wonderland-type atmosphere during a recent concert.

The percussion ensemble, symphonic band, chamber singers, concert chorus and wind ensemble performed more than a dozen holiday themed songs as part of the winter show.

Under the direction of Joanna Young, the percussion ensemble set the mood for the evening with “The First Noel.”

The holiday-inspired hits continued throughout the concert, with a band performance of “A Cowboy Christmas,” featuring director Dave Frateschi wearing a cowboy hat while students donned either Santa hats or cowboy hats.

Also under Frateschi’s direction, the wind ensemble played “Feliz Navidad” and “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” among other hits.

The chamber singers got in on the action with songs such as “Joy to the World” and “This Christmas.”

Vocalists in the concert chorus entertained the audience with “Ha Shalom” and “I saw Three Ships.”

The final number, “Sleigh Ride,” brought the audience to its feet as the bands and choirs combined for this holiday classic.
