Women’s Ice Hockey Falls To Potsdam 2-1 In Rutland Herald Championship Game

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team staged a late rally to pull within one goal in the third period, but fell short in a 2-1 loss to Potsdam in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Invitational hosted by Castleton State. Emily Grippin (Jr., Ithaca, N.Y.) scored the lone Laker goal in the third period and went on to be named to the all-tournament team. The Bears’ Annmarie Lewis registered both goals as linemates Breanna Roy and Stephanie Simons picked up assists on the scores. Oswego State dropped to 5-6-0 overall, while Potsdam improved to 5-6-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Bears took advantage of their two power play opportunities in the second frame at 12:09 and 19:15 as Lewis redirected two Roy slapshots to give Potsdam a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Grippin broke up the shutout bid midway through the third period when she slipped the puck under Bear netminder Jen Conophy at the 14:22 mark. The Lakers went on the power play with 1:48 remaining in the contest, and later a 5-on-3 opportunity in the final 37 seconds. However, Conophy kept Oswego State from tying the score for the 2-1 Potsdam win.

Laker goaltender Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) made 25 saves to fall to 5-4-0 this season. Conophy, who was named the tournament MVP, stopped 31 shots.

Oswego State resumes ECAC West competition on Friday, January 15 when it travels to Rochester, N.Y. to face RIT at 7 p.m.
