What’s the probability of having fun while learning about mathematics? Pretty high, according to the students in Helen Perth’s Multi-Occupations class at Oswego County BOCES. The class recently organized a Probability Carnival for younger students at the school, creating homemade, interactive and fun math-inspired games. Carnival-goers didn’t need luck to win a prize, they just needed to apply the math skills they have been working on all school year. It didn’t take long for the young students to realize that some of the games were not designed in odds of the player. For example, Special Education Teacher Lisa Carney asks Antonio Tassone, a student in her class, to determine the odds of tossing a washer into only a purple cup at the washer-toss game. At 3 out of 10, Antonio quickly realized that the odds were stacked against him and that he had a better chance at hitting a green cup.
