Catholic Charities’ Summer Groups To Benefit Area Youth

FULTON, NY – Catholic Charities of Oswego County will be offering several very special summer groups to benefit area youth age 6 through 10.

Hosted by Catholic Charities and facilitated by counselors from the agency’s Family Support Services program, the summer groups will focus on pertinent issues for children in this age group; anger management, self-esteem, impulse control, bullying, and social skills.

The Anger Management Summer Group, for children 8 years and older, will be held at the Mexico Town Park.  The group will meet July 7, 14 and 21 from 11 a.m. to noon.  Facilitated by Family Support Services counselors, Kana Tryt and Kristian Allen, the group will cover topics such as; the effects of anger on the body, deescalating aggression related anger, and coping mechanisms. These issues will be addressed through educational activities and social interactive games that are focused on effective anger management.

The Impulse Control Summer Group
, for children 10 years and under, will be held at Breitbeck Park in Oswego from 11 a.m. to noon on July 8 and 16 and will be facilitated by Marjorie Storrs and Amy Penfield. The group will cover topics such as identifying impulse triggers and how to redirect them before it gets out of control.

The Bullying Summer Group, for children 8 years and up, will be held in the Volney Town Park from 11 a.m. to noon on July 22 and 29 and Aug. 4 and will be facilitated by Shelly Merritt and Marjorie Storrs. Instruction will focus on identifying inappropriate statements and actions and the proper way to react to them.

The Social Skills Group, for children 6 years and up, will be held in the Volney Town Park from 11 a.m. to noon on July 28 and will be facilitated by Kana Tryt and Amy Penfield. The group will cover topics such as gathering and processing social information, conversations skills, and developing filters and social cues.

The Self-Esteem Summer Group
, for girls 10 years and older, will be held at Taft Park in Constantia from 11 a.m. to noon on Aug. 4, 11 and 18 and will be facilitated by Kristian Allen and Shelley Merritt. The group will cover topics such as: developing a positive self-image, developing self worth, and how to have positive social interactions. The focus of the group will be educational activities and child centered free play that emphasizes the importance of self-esteem.

All of these Summer Groups are offered free of charge.
