Robert H. Chetney, 83

OSWEGO, NY – Robert H. Chetney, 83, of 152 W. Seventh St. in Oswego passed away Wednesday Oct. 6, 2010, at St. Luke’s Health services.

Mr. Chetney was born in Oswego to the late Harold and Dorothy (Muldoon) Chetney.

He was a life resident and graduated from Oswego schools.

Bob served in the US Army and was a World War II veteran.

After his time in the military, he worked as advertising manager at The Palladium Times.

Mr. Chetney retired from Oswego County as the Commissioner of Elections and served as president of the New York State Association of Commissioners of Elections.

In 1975, he founded Chetney Real Estate with his late wife, Helen, most recently serving as the broker and president.

During his successful real estate career, Bob brokered several commercial deals including Wal-Mart, Staples, and Kinney Drugs.

Mr. Chetney was a past president of the Oswego County Board of Realtors and was Realtor of the Year in 1985.

Bob began his political career by joining the Young Republicans for Eisenhower.

He served as legislative aide to former State Senator (H. Douglas) Barclay and Third Ward supervisor from the city of Oswego from 1968-1972.

In 1970, he was elected chairman of the Oswego County Board of Supervisors.

He also served as the chairman of the Oswego City Republican Committee for many years.

Mr. Chetney was a past chairman of the Oswego County Industrial Development Agency and had served on the board of directors of Operation Oswego County and Oswego Hospital.

He was very proud of his Irish heritage.

He was a past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and for many years was host of the Irish-American hour on WSGO.

Mr. Chetney was also a member of the Oswego County Board of Realtors, the K of C, Elks, and the American Legion.

Mr. Chetney was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen (Hennessey), who died in 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth (Bill) Blum; sons, Bob (Jackie) and Brian (Julie);  grandchildren, Erin Chetney, Sean Blum and Claudia, Jake, and Alex Chetney all of Oswego; brothers, Bill (Audrey) of Fulton and Jim (Sandy) of Scriba; brother-in-law, Bob (Sylvia) Hennessey of Whispering Pines, NC; sister-in-law, Marion Hennessey of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to his adopted family, the wonderful staff at St. Luke’s.

Funeral services will be Monday 8:30 a.m. from the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Sunday 3-6 p.m. at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
