Oswego, NY – With the issue of bullying becoming more prevalent, members of the class of 2012 Leadership Oswego County Youth program are lending their support to the growing anti-bullying movement.
On April 28, LOCY members will bring their anti-bullying message to the community by participating in the Annual Family Fun Walk for Autism.
Hosted by the Oswego County Autism Task Force, the Family Fun Walk for Autism will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oswego High School. Utilizing the Leighton School gym and Wilbur Field the goal of the event is to raise awareness of, and educate people on, Autism and the resources available in Oswego County.
Teams and individuals are invited to participate in the 3-mile walk around the track.
The Family Fun Walk also includes a variety of family friendly activities such as face painting, balloon animals, music and more inside Leighton gym.
Additionally, a number of human service agencies and organizations will be on hand to show their support and highlight the services for youth and families that they offer.
One of these booths will focus on the importance of anti-bullying.
LOCY class member Annamarie Forestiere said, “Every year LOCY class members must complete a project that benefits their community. With bullying being a hot-topic issue, we decided that our class project would be to raise awareness of bullying; the emotional and physical affect that it has on its victims; and how we can engage other youth and our community in general to combat this issue to help bring an end to bullying.”
The LOCY anti-bullying booth will be an interactive experience where visitors will be able to meet LOCY class members, receive information on the importance of anti-bullying, and enjoy a number of anti-bullying skits performed by LOCY members. Visitors will also be able to learn more about LOCY and the benefits it provides for its participants.
“We are excited about being a part of the Family Fun Walk for Autism and appreciate the opportunity it gives us to serve our community and do our part to put an end to bullying in Oswego County,” added Forestiere.
Designed to develop skills in potential teen leaders, Leadership Oswego County Youth uses a trustee-based curriculum which, through a series of workshops combining discussions and activities related to the community of Oswego County, works to reinforce aspects of personal, team and community growth. LOCY prepares its graduates to become actively involved in a number of leadership opportunities in Oswego County schools, agencies and other community service organizations.
