Livestock Health and Animal Mortality

OSWEGO COUNTY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County (CCE Oswego County) is hosting a two-part agriculture workshop series focused on livestock-related concerns. The first part will focus on how best to maintain livestock health. The second part will address how best to manage on-farm animal mortalities when they occur. This two-part series is open to all livestock owners and beginning farmers, including cattle, small ruminants, swine, and poultry operations. There is still time to register for both of these workshops.

The Livestock Health Workshop (Part 1) will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the CiTi BOCES David M. Stern building located at 179 County Route 64, Mexico, NY 13114. Guest speakers will be Dr. Toby Pinn-Woodcock from Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center, and Dr. Patrina Ashley, regional Veterinarian for NYS Ag & Markets. Topics will include proper use of antibiotics for production animals (cattle, small ruminants, swine, and poultry), common diseases, veterinary client-patient relationships, and the importance of antimicrobial use. The New York State Cattle Assurance Program (NYSCHAP), which is an integrated prevention program that develops farm-specific herd health plans, will also be discussed. There will be plenty of time for questions.

The Livestock Mortality Workshop (Part 2) will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Wilkholm Farm located in Mexico, NY. Guest speaker will be Jean Bonhotal, Senior Extension Associate and Director of the Cornell Waste Management Institute. Bonhotal will discuss how to properly manage and dispose of livestock mortalities when they occur on the farm. As part of this educational program, there will be an on-farm demonstration provided. There will be plenty of time for questions, including some discussion about manure composting. Wilkholm Farm will also give a guided tour of their robotic diary operation for attendees. The tour will be led by Darren Adsit, co-manager of Wilkholm Farm.
