OSWEGO COUNTY – On Monday, March 25th, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a high-speed pursuit with a 2014 Dodge Charger. The pursuit began in Volney, north of Fulton. During the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle, Michael Mahalick, traveled at speeds as high as 120 miles per hour and traveled in the wrong lane towards oncoming traffic. The pursuit began at around 1:22 PM and ended in Syracuse at around 1:54 PM.
Early in the pursuit, Mahalick ran over stop sticks, which deflated one of the vehicle’s tires, but he continued through the City of Fulton, south on State Route 481, through Phoenix, and into Onondaga County. Mahalick ran a stop sign passing through State Route 481 in Volney and ran red lights at multiple intersections.
While running through the intersection of County Route 57 and State Route 31, Mahalick rear ended a civilian vehicle, which caused him to be boxed in with traffic. Mahalick then drove his vehicle into a police car and the civilian vehicle he had already struck to escape. He then continued down County Route 57 and ran the red light at the intersection with Wetzel Road. Mahalick drove through Liverpool and onto Interstate 81 before ultimately attempting to exit down the wrong way of an off ramp that was barricaded. There, he surrendered to members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office.
Mahalick was arrested for 5 counts of Reckless Endangerment in the first degree, Unlawful Imprisonment in the first degree, Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree, and numerous traffic tickets. Mahalick had a suspended license and the vehicle he was driving did not have insurance. Mahalick was in possession of a butterfly knife and had two warrants for his arrest. The Unlawful Imprisonment charge was due to Mahalick having an unwilling participant as a passenger in his vehicle.
This is the fourth such pursuit the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has had in the month of March.
On March 1st, Amanda Moffett led members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office on a pursuit which started in Albion at around 2:21 PM and ended in West Monroe at around 2:49 PM. During the pursuit, Moffett traveled at speeds as high as 120 miles per hour and passed a school bus at a high rate of speed.
On March 5th, Moffett again led members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office on a high-speed pursuit. This pursuit began in Hastings at around 3:38 AM and ended in West Monroe at around 4:13 AM. Moffett led Law Enforcement eastbound on State Route 69, where she exceeded 100 miles per hour in the wrong lane, causing two civilian vehicles to drive off the roadway. On Nichols Road in Amboy, Moffett stopped the vehicle, where two male passengers exited, and then continued to flee police. Moffett again reached State Route 69 where she reached speeds as fast as 110 miles per hour. Multiple times while on State Route 69 and while traveling at a high rate of speed, she slammed on the brakes, potentially trying to create a collision with Law Enforcement behind her. Moffett eventually drove into a corn field in West Monroe, where she got stuck and was apprehended. Both times Moffett was driving a 2005 Chrysler 300. Moffett was arrested for 3 counts of Reckless Endangerment in the first degree, and numerous traffic tickets. Moffett also had a suspended license and is on probation.
On March 6th, Michael LaValley led police on a high-speed pursuit. LaValley’s pursuit began in Redfield at around 7:54 AM and ended in Oneida County at around 8:36 AM. LaValley was seen going 104 miles per hour in Redfield as he left Oswego County for Oneida County. LaValley drove through the Village of Camden where he drove through the Camden Elementary School zone at speeds over 50 miles per hour and then through the High School zone at speeds over 90 miles per hour. LaValley eventually led Law Enforcement off road, over a creek and a beaver dam. LaValley’s vehicle was eventually found stuck in a wooded area. LaValley was found in the woods shortly thereafter. LaValley was charged with Reckless Endangerment in the first degree and issued numerous traffic tickets. LaValley was also driving with a suspended license.
Moffett and Mahalick are still currently in Oswego County Jail. Oswego County District Attorney Anthony DiMartino has asked the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office to immediately notify him of any high-speed chase.
