Many of the worlds top runners are set to toe the starting line for the 38th Annual Western States 100 mile endurance run on Saturday June 25th in Squaw Valley, CA. Including last years race winner and course record holder, CNY native Geoff Roes. Roes, who grew up in Cleveland, NY was a standout cross country and track runner for Central Square graduating in 1994. He then attended SU for one year and ran cross country there. Geoff ended up leaving SU and moving west to Utah giving up competitive running for about 10 years.
In 2005 Geoff moved to Alaska and began running consistently again for the first time in 10 years. After a couple years of racing in Alaska he began racing ultra races in the lower 48 in 2008. Since then Geoff has raced over 20 ultras, winning most of them, and setting several prominent course records along the way.
The most notable of these being Western States 100 (2010), Wasatch 100 (2009), Mountain Masochist 50 (2009), and Crow Pass Crossing (2009 + 2010). Geoff was voted Ultrarunning magazine’s 2009 and 2010 “Ultrarunner of the Year”. After 4 years living full time in Juneau, AK. Geoff is now living in Nederland, CO during the school year and in Juneau during the summer.
Geoff has been named Ultrarunning Magazines North American Ultra Runner of the Year for the past two years (2009, 2010)
Geoff also recently started, and directs an Alaska Mountain Ultrarunning Camp, which is a series of week long running camps in Juneau, Alaska giving participants the opportunity to run high on mountain ridges overlooking glaciers and snow capped mountains, and along pristine coastline. http://akultracamp.blogspot.com/. His first camp was a huge success. Many of the runners who attended contest that it was the best week of their lives.
Roes won The Western States 100 last year in what many consider to be the best 100 mile ultra race performance ever on US soil. Geoff fought back from over 25 minutes behind with 25 miles to go to eventually shatter the previous course record with a time of 15 hours 7 minutes on a course that most runners goal is to break the 24 hour mark. Please contact me for more information on this wonderful local sports story. There are a lot of people from around the area who remember Geoff as one of the best x-country runners in Section III… however very few people locally realize that he has turned into the Top Rated American Male 100 mile Ultra Runner.
