Rotarians Hear Message of Change in War on Drugs

November 14, 2011 Submitted article

Peter Christ, left, is thanked by Rotarian Steve Osborne at a recent Fulton Rotary Club meeting. Peter is a retired captain (20 years) with the Tonawanda Police Department. He spoke on behalf of the nonprofit educational organization, LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition). LEAP is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation with a membership in excess of 50,000. LEAP was formed in 2002 by Peter and his fellow police officers, judges and citizens. The underlying philosophy of “Prohibition” simply does not work. During Peter’s 20 years as a policeman, he observed and had to deal with many criminal elements as a result of illegal drugs. The war on drugs is costing us $90 billion a year. LEAP feels that if drugs were legal and regulated by the Federal and State Government, it would remove the gangsters and the related violence from our society. The underlying philosophy of “Prohibition” simply does not work. During Peter’s 20 years as a policeman, he observed and had to deal with many criminal elements as a result of illegal drugs.
