A 15-year-old boy was injured Wednesday evening after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in the the city of Oswego. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with DWI. The teen’s injuries are said to be non-life threatening
The First Rose of Summer, a novel by Eileen K. Parsons of Orwell, was recently awarded 2014 New York Book Festival Runner Up honors. Parsons received the award at the Grolier Club, founded in 1884, in New York City in June as part of an evening honoring festival winners.
The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services has awarded a $200 mini-grant to the VOW Foundation for the first Oswego County Substance Awareness Family Education Fair. The event is being planned for August 16 from noon – 5 p.m. at the Mexico VFW. The VOW Foundation was formed in 2013, named in honor of Victor Orlando Woolson who had a fatal reaction to synthetic drugs.
The “4” the Love of Reading Award was presented to students at the Frederick Leighton Elementary School. Long time educator Norma Barnes retired from the district several years ago, but her support of her former school continues.

The Harborfest Children’s Committee has planned another great schedule of family entertainment throughout this year’s festival. The fun begins with the Children’s Gala on July 22. The event runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m., rain or shine, at the Breitbeck Park Food Court.
