Common Core Still Leaves Room for Improvement

The NYS Department of Education recently released the assessment results for third through eighth graders. The Department of Education reports there were some gains statewide over last year’s results. Statewide the percentage of students scoring on the math exam at or above the proficient level (receiving a score of 3 or 4) increased only slightly from 31.2% to 35.8%. The English Language Arts exam showed virtually no change, with 31.4% of New York students “proficient” as compared to last year’s score of 31.3% scoring proficient.

Coleman invites community to Thursday open house

Family court judge candidate Lou Anne Rucynski Coleman will welcome community members to an open house on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at her campaign headquarters, 7 W. Bridge St. The location, in the former King Arthur’s restaurant, will allow voters to enjoy the Oswego Farmers’ Market in addition to meeting and learning more about the candidate.

New Autumn Guide Describes Fall Foliage Tours in Oswego County

Oswego County’s diverse forests and rural scenery provide a spectacular mix of beautiful foliage every fall.
To help people find their way around some of the most scenic areas, the Oswego County Tourism Office is distributing a free fall foliage brochure. “The Autumn Guide” includes directions for three fall foliage driving tours and lists the top spots for viewing fall foliage in Oswego County.

SUNY Oswego’s 52nd Juried Student Exhibition to open Oct. 17

SUNY Oswego’s 52nd annual Juried Student Exhibition will open with a free public reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17, in Tyler Art Gallery at Penfield Library. Entry is open to any SUNY Oswego student in any artistic medium, whether two- or three-dimensional. The exhibition will run through Nov. 9 in the gallery’s second-floor display space.

Syrell Racing/Hawk Chassis Racing Calendar to Return in 2015

Syrell Racing and Hawk Chassis are partnering once again for the return of their Supermodified racing calendar for the upcoming 2015 season. Last season Syrell Racing put together the inaugural Supermodified calendar featuring 13 local models, including Speedway trophy girls Caylee Heagerty and Mackenzie Coleman.
