In 1961, Ruth Colvin, a resident of Central New York, read an article in the newspaper claiming that more than 11,000 people in her town were unable to read. Shocked by this information, Ms. Colvin decided to take it upon herself to do something about it. It was defining moment for Ms. Colvin and her life’s work. She pioneered Literacy Volunteers of America, a program providing literacy tutoring to adults.

The fourth graders at Sandy Creek Elementary School experienced a little bit of Native American culture from performer and teaching artist Dave Ruch. Ruch brought along a handmade rattle made by the Iroquois and had the children guess what materials the Iroquois might have used to make such an instrument long ago.

Due to the growing homeless population in Oswego County, the Oswego County Department of Social Services has partnered with the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, Oswego County Opportunities, and Catholic Charities to utilize AmeriCorps members under the Economic Opportunity Program to help provide homeless services for many at-risk individuals. Ritchie Calls On Governor To Reopen Hastings Rest Area, Add ‘Taste NY’ Store

The request comes after the Governor last week proposed an expansion of Taste NY, setting goals to add Taste NY retail stores in strategic locations and triple gross sales of participating vendors in the coming year. In her letter to Governor Cuomo, Senator Ritchie suggests reopening the rest area between exits 32 and 31, which has sat vacant since 2010 and adding a Taste NY retail location in an effort to welcome visitors and highlight local products.
