Back-to-school season is here. It’s time for parents to gather school supplies and backpacks. It’s also the perfect time to make sure your children are up to date on their vaccines.
The students completed more than 108 hours of classroom training and field work between March and June. During their final field tests in the Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area, all 15 students were individually evaluated for their skills in map and compass, land navigation, global positioning systems, and survival skills as they covered a course more than three miles in length.
Local youths can take part in their own event as a part of Oswego Health’s upcoming Run For Your Health 5K walk/run on August 13. A free one-mile run for those age four to 12 will take place on the Seneca Hill campus just prior to the start of the main race. The fun run starts at 8 a.m., with the 5K race beginning at 8:30 a.m. All participants for the kids run must be registered.
Just recently, I had the opportunity to take part in the 56th annual Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival Parade, an event that celebrates the local community, and the North Country region as a whole. This year, the parade’s theme was “There’s No Place Like Home” – a sentiment that rings true for me, and for so many others who have built their lives in the Central and Northern New York.
For the first time, Oswego Speedway officials will apply a traction compound to the outside groove of the 5/8 mile Steel Palace oval in anticipation of this weekend’s racing program to be held on Saturday, August 6. The LC7 compound will be applied to the surface on Friday morning in anticipation of Fast Friday testing which will run from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Yes, for just $20 per car-load, everyone will be able to enjoy a night of high-speed, door to door racing excitement on the ‘Hignbanks.’
St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence in Oswego will host a workshop by the Alzheimer’s Association entitled, “Legal and Financial Planning” on August 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. This educational workshop is free of charge and open to the public.
Here’s a question that has been “bugging” me, if you know what I mean. Is it OK to kiss your pets? Really. I do sometimes, not a big slobbery kiss, but a little smooch on the snout of my adorable black lab, Miranda, and sometimes she gives me a little lick that I would consider a kiss. Is there any harm in it? My girlfriend is totally grossed out by it and insists that I should not be doing it at all.
The Fulton Polish Home will have a Polish Home Golf Classic on August 28 at the Battle Island Golf Course. Tee time will be at 8 a.m. and the format is Captain and Crew.
