The Oswego State men’s basketball team claimed sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC standing by fending off Brockport 78-75 on Friday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego now holds a 14-4 record overall and a 10-1 league mark while the Golden Eagles fall to 15-4, 10-2.
The Oswego State women’s basketball team suffered a 70-62 setback to Brockport despite an impressive first-half defensive performance on Friday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 5-13 on the year and 2-9 in SUNYAC action.

Irene M. Gugula, 87, formerly of Hannibal, passed away on Wednesday January 25, 2017, at Oswego Hospital in Oswego.
Employees from Exelon and all four offices of Oswego County Federal Credit Union distributed hundreds of gloves, mittens, hats, and scarves in the second annual “Gloves with Love” program to collect new hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves for kids. Both Exelon and OCFCU collected these items from through November and December and distributed them by tying them to trees, benches and lampposts, in public areas of Oswego, Mexico and Fulton.
The Oswego Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 7:37 a.m. today (Jan. 27) at Port City Logistics, located at 305 E. Seneca St. The initial dispatch reported an excavator on fire in the structure. Oswego Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 7:41 a.m.

There are many reasons why it’s a bad idea to encourage kids to hurt and kill animals for fun (“Hunting, Fishing Education Has Place in Our Schools,” January 23). Hunting has driven numerous species to extinction or endangered status. The money generated by hunters’ license fees and other expenditures often benefits only the hunters themselves.
