University Police at SUNY Oswego arrested John J. Turano Jr., 19, on Aug. 27 for charges including felony possession of marijuana. Turano, a sophomore at SUNY Oswego, originally from Whitestone, was arrested after a traffic stop discovered he was allegedly carrying 41 pounds of marijuana, police said.

State Senator Patty Ritchie announced Tuesday (August 29) she has secured $80,000 in special funding to aid victims of domestic violence in Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence counties. Funding secured by Senator Ritchie will help three agencies in Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence counties strengthen the services they provide to victims.
The First Congregational Church UCC of New Haven will observe its 200th anniversary this September, with a number of celebratory events. The church will commemorate the anniversary with a Harvest Weekend Celebration beginning the evening of September 16.
The Oswego Elks will hold its annul Big Bucks Party on October 1. We will have a 50/50 raffles during the day also we will be having a Chinese auction. The party is open to the public.
Executive director of instruction and assessment, Elizabeth Conners, along with G. Ray Bodley High School principal, Donna Parkhurst announced that the FCSD high school graduation rate was officially reported at 84 percent for the June 2017 graduates. While the final number has room to slightly fluctuate with the official results of August graduates pending completion of summer courses, Parkhurst said the current rating brings an increase of eight percent over last year’s 76 percent graduation rate. Following the announcement, the board of education was given a brief overview of recently released state testing results for grades third through eighth, with a more in depth presentation to follow at a later meeting.
With Classic Week officially under way at Oswego Speedway, many fans traveling to the track from across the country, or simply making plans for the weekend, are all looking for a full-time schedule for Friday, September 1, Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3, as the track has fielded several requests for further scheduling and pricing information with the biggest event of the season approaching.
The Mexico Academy and Central School District recently welcomed Jennifer Stanton as its Director of Pupil Services. Her passion for helping children overcome challenges began in college when she had an internship at a pre-school for students with disabilities and immediately “loved leveling the playing field for students who have great potential.”
