Haunted History Trail of New York State Wins 2018 PRism Award

The statewide tourism trail earned two recognitions for excellence in marketing and public relations – one first-place PRism Award and one Award of Excellence. The PRism was awarded for the Trail’s “Spooky” Social Media. In 2017, they hired Break the Ice Media, to create and execute a strategy around Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Channels, with a goal to increase reach, tap into new audiences and increase overnight visitation.

John and Sally Sodemann Sroka, successful 1966 SUNY Oswego graduates, pose with 2018 graduate Trevor Wilcox, recipient of the scholarship the Srokas established for a student with financial need who wishes to pursue a career in teaching. The couple also reached out to the college and its marketing faculty and students to explore ways to better recruit younger generations to become volunteer firefighters, a cause to which the Srokas are very devoted.

As president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, 1966 SUNY Oswego graduate John Sroka understands firsthand how important volunteer firefighters are to the safety of New York State. Of the state’s 1,665 registered fire departments, more than 90 percent rely solely on volunteers, so he turned to his alma mater to address falling numbers of recruits.

‘The Voice’ Competitor Carpentier to Hold Meet and Greet, Perform Anthems Saturday at Oswego Speedway

Gary Carpentier, a 27-year-old singer/songwriter from Oswego, who made national debut this past fall on season 13 of NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ will sing both anthems as well as hold a meet and greet as part of the Century 21 Galloway and Oswego D Bus Independence Weekend special at Oswego Speedway Saturday.
