FULTON, NY – Fairgrieve Elementary students impressed their peers and teachers with their fierce competition at the school’s recent Battle of the Books event.
In preparation of the school battle, the teams of two or three students each read all 10 of the required books for their grade level.
Several hours of reading and studying took place leading up to the main event, where each group had 30 seconds each to answer 16 questions that began with “In which book…”
Students were also required to write down their answers, to which they earned eight points for a correct title and author, or five points for a title only.
“The Wise Ones” Level 2 team members and fifth graders Natalie Miller, Riley Niver and Doug VanSanford received first place with 101 points.
They advanced to the Fulton City School District battle, along with “Deep Sea Readers” team members and fifth graders Ciara Dillingham, Dawson Krause and Rosalind Taylor, all of whom collectively earned 96 points.
During the Level 1 Fairgrieve competition, students in grades three and four quietly discussed their question answers and excitedly clapped and cheered when their best guess was correct.
While Jayceon Barber and A.J. Burns of team “Double Trouble” advanced to the district battle with 85 points, teams “Keep Calm, Read On” and ”The PAWsome Readers” battled it out with a tiebreaker question to find out what second team would also advance.
After answering “In which book does a character send a message via pneumatic tubes?” correctly, “Keep Calm, Read On” members Matthew Clark, Natalie Guile and Kenadie Shatraw were victories.
All Level 1 and Level 2 Fairgrieve competitors received participation certificates and first place and second place teams received medals.
