OSWEGO – St. Luke Health Services in Oswego will host a workshop featuring Dr. Renante Ignacio, who will discuss advance care planning and advanced directives. The workshop will take place on May 10 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Riverview Room at St. Luke.
The workshop is free of charge and the public is invited to attend.
This informative workshop led by Dr. Ignacio will highlight the importance of Advance Directives and of making your health care preferences known, and the necessary documents used to record your care preferences here in New York State.
Dr. Ignacio and staff from St. Luke will review the definition of Advance Directives; discuss life sustaining treatments, artificial hydration, nutrition, and the Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment.
Pastoral Care Coordinator Debbie Greutman will discuss the role spiritual considerations can play in the process.
A question and answer session will be a part of the program.
“Advance care planning involves making decisions about the care or life sustaining treatments you would want to receive if you become unable to speak for yourself, and making these decisions known to your family and healthcare providers. These are your decisions to make, regardless of what you choose for your care, and these decisions are based on each individual’s personal values, preferences, and discussions with your loved ones,” said Beverly Aubin, RN, MSEd, a member of the St. Luke Palliative Care team.
“Unexpected situations can happen at any age. Having advanced directives in place not only ensures that your wishes are known, but prevents the stressful burden of family members or other designated persons from making emergent decisions in crisis situations,” added Aubin. “It is also a misnomer to think that advance care planning should take place only after someone is hospitalized, facing a serious illness or enters a care facility. Individuals should be having the discussions and making their health care decisions beforehand.”
The community is welcome to attend and take part in this informative workshop which will provide you with a better understanding of what advance care planning is and is not, and what steps you need to take to document your care wishes. Light refreshments will be provided and reservations are not required.
