U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 165th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Division, the former 69th New York, pass through the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, Germany as they assume occupation duties December 13, 1918. The 165th Infantry was renamed from the New York National Guard’s 69th Infantry Regiment, based in New York City and comprised mainly of Soldiers from Irish lineage. The 42nd Division, known as the Rainbow Division for its inclusion of various National Guard units from across the United States, served as an occupation force in the Rhineland following the armistice that ended World War I.
