All-Around Effort Helps Oswego State Volleyball Defeat Alfred 3-1

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team was strong in every aspect of the game to defeat Alfred University 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 26-28, 25-15) Saturday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Outside hitters Jess Isgro and Katie van Kessel posted double-doubles for the Lakers as Isgro finished with 13 kills and digs, while van Kessel added 12 kills and 18 digs. The victory moved Oswego State to 6-13 overall, and will travel to Keuka Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest before hosting the Oswego State Invitational October 8-9. Alfred dropped to 5-11 on the season.

In a seesaw first set, the Saxons owned a 21-19 lead until a van Kessel service ace, a kill by Isgro, and a pair of Alfred hitting errors gave Oswego State a slim two-point edge at 23-21. Alfred won the next two points to even the score at 23, but Isgro slammed a kill down the left sideline to set up match point for the Lakers. Liz Crouch closed out the set with a service ace to give Oswego State the first set 25-23.

Crouch got the Lakers out to a fast start in the second set by running off three straight service aces for an early 4-1 lead. Oswego State continued to widen the gap as it built a 20-13 advantage, which was punctuated by a service ace by Kelsey Ihle. The Saxons did not get closer than five points the rest of the way en route to a 25-19 second set win for the Lakers.

Alfred gained the momentum from the beginning of the third set as it established a comfortable 20-13 lead. However, Oswego State’s blocking unit disrupted the Saxon offense with two blocks with van Kessel also contributing two kills to cut Alfred’s lead to 19-17. The Lakers erased two set points before a service ace by Chelsea Hall forced the match into a fourth set.

Oswego State rallied around Isgro and van Kessel in the final set as the duo combined for six kills, while the Saxons committed eight hitting errors to give the Lakers the victory.

Stephany Olsheski handed out 34 assists for Oswego State, while Liz Crouch contributed 18 digs and six service aces. At the net, Morgan Grimes recorded two solo blocks. Paige Jensen paced Alfred with 13 kills, while Emily Crosby recorded 20 digs and Janelle Gallipeau added 33 assists and 14 digs.
