Advancing teams and their team members included, in front, left to right: Team Super Chickens, Lara Kinney, Abagail Sweeney, and Helaina Hale.

Middle row: Red Readers, Ethan Pernisi, Harlee Lucier, and Amber Amidon; APW Rebel Reading Warriors, Natalie Horning, Abigail Babcock, and Katelin Castor.

Back row: Book Besties, Jasmyn Trumble and Alyssa Hamilton; and team Unknown, Jillian Mueller and Evan Colvin.

The Battle of the Books began as a statewide reading motivation in Alaska in the early 1980s with the goals to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence and broaden reading interests.

It has since grown to include competitions in many states and is very popular with students.

More than that, though, it has proven effective in its original purpose, to stimulate an interest in reading.
