Sandra Scott Travels: Lighthouses – A Beacon for all Travelers

Statue of LibertyMany people don’t think of the Statue of Liberty as a lighthouse but it was officially classified as a lighthouse from 1886 to 1902 and was the first American lighthouse to utilize electricity to light its beacon, which could be seen for more than 20 nautical miles.
There are nearly 100 lighthouses in New York State that have safely guided ocean, lake and canal vessels through the years.

Governor Declares State of Emergency over Storm’s Impending Arrival

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency in New York in preparation for the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy, which may hit New York State in the coming days. A state of emergency mobilizes resources to local governments that otherwise are restricted to state use only and suspends regulations that would impede rapid response.
