Artswego’s Season Series to Share a World of Tales

Actor and oral historian Judith Sloan gives voice and personality to the vibrantly diverse immigrants living in Queens, where by one count 138 languages are spoken. Hers is the lead performance in a SUNY Oswego Artswego season that focuses on how performers and artists use the media of their craft to advance the ancient art of telling tales. Sloan's "Crossing the BLVD" will take the stage Sept. 14 and 15 at Waterman Theatre on the SUNY Oswego campus.“Telling Tales: The Arts and Discovery” is the thematic banner for a lineup of musicians, dancers, actors, filmmakers and other artists who will visit the lakeside campus during the academic year.

Pirates Invade Summer Program at APW

“What ayer ye be orderin’ fer yer lunch today, matey?” Bonnie Horning, School Lunch Manager at APW, (right) asked pirate Nick Tibbles (left) in her best pirate accent. The Summer of Discovery Program offered by the APW district through the 21st Century grant, featured themed weeks including student-favorite pirate week recently at Parish Elementary School. A special pirate cookout was held to kick off the pirate week.The pirate-themed week of activities kicked off with pirate costumes and a cookout. The summer program with a camp atmosphere provided students a fun opportunity to do their best “Jack Sparrow” imitation by sporting pirate bandanas and colorful eye patches during the lunchtime picnic.

‘Crossing the BLVD’ to Tell Immigrants’ Inspiring Tales

 Selections from the three-year documentary art project of Warren Lehrer, left, and Judith Sloan titled "Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors and aliens in a new America" will be on display Aug. 29 to Oct. 10 in Tyler Art Gallery at SUNY Oswego. Sloan, an actor and oral historian, also will bring her one-woman show of the same name to Waterman Theatre of Tyler Hall on Sept. 14 and 15, bringing alive the voices, other sounds and images she and Lehrer, her husband, experienced in their "world tour" of the multiculturally rich borough of Queens.SUNY Oswego will launch a year of “Telling Tales: The Arts and Discovery” with the opening of an interactive, multimedia art exhibition that brings alive the stories of immigrants and refugees in a “modern-day Ellis Island where cultures overlap in chaotic co-existence.”
